Built around 1930 as a voice frequency (VF) repeater along the Kansas City-St. Louis cable route, the Wright City repeater station was an example of an earlier time in the Bell System days with its ornate Tudor Revival-style architecture. The repeater station is made of brick, terra cotta, limestone and concrete.
The site was a K-carrier repeater from the 1940s onwards — as were its sister stations in Aullville, Boonville and Kingdom City. (The design was originally used at Wright City and mimicked at Aullville and Kingdom City. The Boonville central office was designed by a separate architect in the Classical Revival style.) In the 1950s, it became a microwave relay site in the AT&T Long Lines network, relaying telephone traffic between Gray Summit and Elsberry.
The Wright City site was deactivated fairly early — even before the Bell System divestiture — in the late 1970s. Shortly after the radios were turned down, the site’s tower was dismantled.
The site was briefly sold to a family in 1979. Then it became Reliance Automotive, an automotive parts supplier, in 1981. In the mid-late 2000s, the site was transformed into its current form — home of an American Bank of Freedom branch — and an additional building (a “Loans Operation Center”) was eventually constructed north of the original repeater station.
A road bordering the property to the west is still known as Bell Road. The repeater site is listed on the National Register of Historic Places, reference number 07000039.
